Tether, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT, is scaling its real-world asset (RWA) tokenization business in the Middle East. The company is launching a project to bring Saudi Arabia's institutional real estate on-chain. For us at Unit Stake, this move is yet another indicator of how major crypto players are diversifying their businesses and building infrastructure for traditional capital.
Infrastructure and Project Partners
The technological foundation for issuing and managing tokenized real estate will be Hadron—a platform launched by Tether in 2024 specifically to streamline asset tokenization processes. The project is not being executed in isolation: Tether is entering the market in partnership with local Saudi company First Data and fintech firm BKN301.
Market Context and the Vision 2030 Strategy
The choice of jurisdiction is no coincidence. Saudi Arabia has emerged as one of the key markets adopting blockchain technology as part of its "Vision 2030" state economic diversification strategy. The Kingdom is actively integrating enterprise blockchain solutions across the financial sector, government administration, and logistics.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino emphasized the strategic importance of the region: "With Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia stands out as an ideal market for demonstrating the impact of platforms like Hadron by Tether."
Scaling Potential
Although institutional real estate has been chosen as the starting point, project participants stated that the operating model could be expanded in the future. Plans include tokenizing assets in energy, infrastructure finance, and other economic sectors.
Industry Impact: Banks and asset managers are increasingly turning to tokenization (for money market funds, private credit, real estate, and equities) because it streamlines settlements, improves capital efficiency, and broadens investor access. According to Citi forecasts, the tokenized securities market could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030. This sector is not new for Tether: the company already successfully manages the market's largest gold-backed token (XAUT), which boasts a market capitalization of $2.6 billion.
